2020 rainfall improves following weekend downpour

RAINFALL levels for many Riverland towns so far in 2020 have doubled the total amount recorded in the whole of 2019, with some areas of the region receiving more than 10mm over the weekend.
The Bureau of Meterology (BoM) recorded 13.2mm of rainfall in Renmark between Saturday night and Sunday morning, with 7.2mm falling in Loxton during the same period.
Rainfall totals of 10mm in Waikerie, 11mm in Glossop and 8mm in Barmera were also reported by Murray Pioneer readers.
A BoM spokesperson said a low-pressure system moving upward across South Australia resulted in prolonged rainfall for the Riverland.
“It was a number of storms,” the spokesperson said.
“We had a low-pressure system, which on Saturday weakened and moved south-eastward.
“A trough of low-pressure associated with that produced numerous showers and thunderstorms across the north-east of the state on Friday and Saturday, with heavy local falls and flooding.
“There was a lot of showers and storms, so the rainfalls were well above average for this time of year.”
