Kingston Rd ‘closed by next week’ - Pasin issues plea to SA government
1 min read

KINGSTON Road, travelling through Moorook, is expected to be closed to all traffic by the middle of next week, due to the rising River Murray.

The Department of Infrastructure and Transport (DIT) issued the warning this afternoon, when it also advised that the road would be closed to some heavy vehicles from 6pm today.

The DIT said the move would limit damage to the road “allowing it to remain open to other traffic for as long as possible”.

Vehicles heavier than 15 tonnes will need to detour via Stott Highway and Hunter Road, to return to Sturt Highway near Blanchetown.

“Kingston Road is expected to need to be closed to all traffic by mid next week,” DIT said.

However, just hours ago Barker MP Tony Pasin issued a plea to SA Infrastructure and Transport Minister Tom Koutsantonis for the SA government to do everything in its power to keep the road open.

"The ramifications... would be disastrous for those currently travelling this road, which is now the major link between Loxton and Berri, given the recent closure of Bookpurnong Road," Mr Pasin said in a letter to the minister.

"Urgent action is required to protect Kingston Road, which would require levees on relatively short section of that road."

Earlier today the SA government’s latest flood forecast shows the peak flow of floodwater through Renmark is expected to be between 190GL and 220GL a day by the end of December.

A section of Bookpurnong Road, linking Berri to Loxton, was closed a week ago.

Meanwhile, a section of Taylorville Road, near Waikerie, is expected to be closed to all traffic within coming days.

“Once closed, Waikerie ferry will remain accessible for light vehicles only,” DIT said.

“Staff are continuing to undertake regular assessments of low-lying roads in the region and we continue to monitor current and predicted flood levels.

“Remember, conditions can change quickly and roads may have to be closed at short notice.”
