THREE Loxton High School students, Evelyn, Vishwa, and Brock, were part of the River Murray Youth Council (RMYC) that last week gave a “powerful” talk to more than 200 attendees at a major water resource conference.
RMYC members at the River Reflections Conference – hosted last week in Murray Bridge by the Murray-Darling Basin Association – presented A Youth Perspective: Views from Tomorrow’s Leaders, sharing what they value most about the Murray River and surrounding landscapes, including the importance of biodiversity, native species protection, and sustainable land use.
A post on the Loxton High School Facebook page said “their courage and outstanding demeanour truly shone through, making us incredibly proud”.
“These inspiring young leaders represented not only the RMYC but also our region, their homes, families, and our school,” the post read.
“Speaking in front of over 200 attendees, they passionately expressed their love for their local environment and their hopes for its future.
“Over the past month, these students dedicated extra time and effort to prepare for this event, they attended meetings, honed their public speaking skills, and practised tirelessly. Their hard work paid off as they became the stars of the show.
“Even MDBA CEO Andrew McConville personally congratulated them on their efforts, (and) there were tears of pride and a big round of applause as they left the stage. We extend our heartfelt thanks to the Murraylands and Riverland Landscape Board education team for their support, and to all who allowed these students to take time to work with the RMYC.”
