Book Week fever sweeping the region

MUCH-loved storybook characters were seen roaming the region last week as students celebrated Book Week.
The Children’s Book Council of Australia’s annual Book Week event was postponed this year due to COVID, however Loxton Lutheran School instructional leader and librarian Trish Wright said it was worth the wait.
“Students absolutely love Book Week – especially the parade – so postponing it so that it could be celebrated properly worked out well,” she said.
“Each year for many years, Book Week has brought students nationwide together and it’s important books, authors and illustrators are celebrated.
“This year’s theme, Curious Creatures, Wild Minds, tied in well with our school values because we are always encouraging the students at the Lutheran School to be curious.
“We always have a mid-week parade outside and it was so lovely to see so many parents and visitors come along because we haven’t been able to have anyone on our school grounds for a while.”
Ms Wright said the school held many “fun activities” during the week.
“Each day we had something organised for the students and each classroom did something different,” she said.
“We created colourful displays, ran a colouring-in competition and highlighted the importance of reading.
“We were extremely lucky to have Karen from the Loxton Public Library come down, read to the kids and help with some craft activities.
“We also had a talk from one of our student’s parent Amanda Schubert, who has recently published a book – written and illustrated by her.”
Ms Wright said the staff embraced Book Week and had a “great time”.
“Every staff member dressed up and got involved during the parade,” she said.
“We had our SSOs (student support officers) dress-up as sheep and throughout the whole parade the students were looking out for the green sheep, which was fantastic.”
Year 1 student Ehan said he enjoyed participating in the Book Week parade.
“I was really excited to dress up as Gruffalo because he is my favourite character,” he said.
“I made my costume with my mum and I am happy with how it looks.
“I can’t wait for Book Week next year so I can go as something else and maybe make my costume again.”
