Behind The Business: Music Alive

MUSIC ALIVE

Karyn Skewes

Job title: Owner/director

Years of service: 18

Karyn Skewes is synonymous with the word ‘music’ in the Riverland for her love of teaching and sharing the gift that is sound.

After teaching piano lessons from her own home for years, Karyn opened the doors to Music Alive in 2006 in a bid to tackle her ever-growing list of keen students.

Now, Music Alive has 10 teachers with 250 students learning how to sing and play musical instruments each week.

Karyn said Music Alive services the whole Riverland and Mallee, from Morgan to Murrayville.

“We started with piano, but now we teach singing, drums, guitar violin, trumpet and clarinet,” she said.

Karyn said she enjoys the variety of her job the most.

“I love the fact that on any given day, I have students aged from five to 80 for singing, piano, small groups and as many personalities as there are students,” she said.

“Every day I get energy from lots of different sources.”

Music Alive is based at Loxton, but also teaches at a number of local schools.

Karyn said the business prides itself on the ability to adapt to each student’s requirements.
