TIGERS TRY TO RELOAD
By NICK DILLON
Loxton Football Club's B grade team could be penalised after playing an unregistered player, putting its premiership defence in jeopardy.
The player in question played in three of its four wins this season, with an administration error on the Tigers' behalf leading to the player being not cleared when he took to the field.
The team will lose six premiership points if penalized by the RFL commission, which will drop the Tigers from third to fifth.
Club president Malcolm Fielke is hopeful the team will still be able to make the finals if penalised.
“The way they've been playing has been quite good,” Mr Fielke said.
“If we lose all those points through the mistake, we'd like to think we can still make the finals and be contenders.”
With the likes of playing coach Grant Dahlitz, full forward Jade Wright, hard-nosed on-baller Steve Westbrook and former A grade Don Cregan, the Tigers are one of the top teams in the competition on their day.
Mr Fielke said it was a minor error which led to the discretion.
“It was an honest mix-up,” he said.
“There was a mistake where an email wasn't read or attended to which said he hadn't been cleared.
“He hadn't paid his subs (at his former club).
“It came as a shock to me at the beginning of the week so I got stuck into it straight away.
“We won't know anything though until the RFL commission check it out.”
The player has since been cleared to play for Loxton by the RFL, which will hold a commission meeting in the next week to decide the Tigers' fate.
Forward role for Bennett
Renmark vice-captain Ryan Bennett has been named in a forward pocket for West Adelaide tomorrow.
Bennett, who was asked by West Adelaide senior coach Andy Collins to have another crack at league level, will join fellow Riverlanders Ben Fisher and Wade Champion in the team to take on Sturt at Waikerie.
Former Barmera-Monash lad Jono Beech could also play, after being named on an extended bench at the time of printing.
Champion, who last played in the Riverland in Waikerie's 2000 grand final team, will make his return to the A grade side at full back on league leading goal kicker Brant Chambers.
The Murray River Cup is expected to draw a large crowd to the Waikerie Oval, with both clubs sticking around after the match for presentations in the Waikerie Football Club.
The Riverland Independents will start as favourites to beat the Mid Murray in the curtain raiser.
The Independents won last year's encounter, but will be missing several stars including Paringa's Anthony Lippis and Cobdogla's Darrell Tilbrook.
However, the addition of Ramco to the league this year will give the side some extra firepower, while the Mid Murray will no doubt miss the Roosters' input.
An under 17 match between the two leagues will be played before the A grade, with gates opening at 8am.
Eastern squad on par with last year
The Eastern zone's squad for this weekend's South Australian Country Football Championships in Port Pirie has been finalised.
While the team will be missing state country representatives Ryan Bennett, who is lining up for West Adelaide, and Damian Stevens (hamstring), regional director Tim Jackson said the squad was on par with last year's championship winning team.
“In for Bennett we've got Alex Kennedy from Tanunda in for Ryan Bennett who kicked 100 goals last year, Paul Stelzer is a clean swap for Matt Stelzer,” Mr Jackson said.
Mr Jackson said more specialist forwards had been picked this year, with the inclusion of Kennedy and Loxton's Pete Smith.
“The defence looks pretty good too with Michael Arnold, Peter Safralidis and Dillon Millard,” he said. “It's an in-form side, all of these blokes are in red-hot form.”
Eastern will play Eyre Peninsula and Murray South East in tomorrow's minor round matches and Mr Jackson expects a tough day.
“Murray South East have Murray Bridge now and they were probably the second best side last year,” he said.
“Eyre Peninsula are always around the mark, but at least we don't have to play Southern in the minor round like last year.”
Loxton's Leigh Kruger will co-captain the side with Tanunda's Ben Newberry.
SQUAD
Riverland: Paul Stelzer, Simon Callahan, Michael Arnold, Ryan Proud, Leigh Kruger, Pete Smith, Dillon Millard, Jackson Sutton, Peter Safralidis.
Mallee: Shaun Walker, Brad Sheridan.
Barossa: Greg Bain, Brad Valentine, Ryan Foulis, Craig Gogoll, Matthew Lutze, Todd Wylie, Luke Wells, Andrew Prior, Alex Kennedy, Ben Newberry, Sam Walton.
Superdogs record barnstorming victory
By NICK KOSSATCH
The Riverland Superdogs Masters over 35 football side returned to the winner's list in barnstorming fashion against Pooraka winning by 87 points at Berri Oval on Sunday.
After an inaccurate first half, highlighted by Johnny 'The Whiz' Barrett's goal hungriness - the Dogs' debutant Scott Muller (four goals) was a focal point and Paul 'Weeds' Matthews racked up telling possessions.
Another new player, Mark Wilksch, donned the red and black guernsey and played a superb game on a wing.
He appreciated being a player rather than copping abuse as an RFL umpire.
'Weeds' was hit and winded unceremoniously leaving the ex-Paringa hardnut on the turf before he recovered to star for his side.
The hosts booted 10-3 in the second half including a brilliant Pooraka error that gifted Lance Gum an open goal.
Geoff Cubbin gave Muller support as another handy forward with some strong marks and the schoolteacher booted an important goal.
Shane 'Rowdy' Healy played his usual creative game and slotted three majors, while paramedic Brett 'Greeny' Greenslade dominated in midfield and the centre clearances.
RESULTS
Superdogs 14-17 (101) d Pooraka 2-2 (14).
Best: M. Wilksch, S. Healy, P. Matthews, S. Muller, B. Greenslade, J. Barrett
Goals: S. Muller 4, S. Healy 3, P. Rowe 2, J. Barrett, M. Wilksch, G. Cubbin, D. Tieste, L. Gum.
Crows visit in Renmark
Adelaide Crows star Brent Reilly will visit the region this Wednesday for the Riverland Crows Supporters Group Shed Party at the Renmark Sporting Club.
Reilly, will join former players Mark Ricciuto, Darren Jarman and Andrew Crowell at the club from 7.30pm.
Locals will get their chance to test their kicking skills against Ricciuto in his 'long kick challenge' which he has taken throughout the state over the past few months.
The best long kicker in the Riverland will then test his skills against other finalists throughout the state at AAMI Stadium in round 19 when the Crows play Collingwood.
Tickets for the Shed Party are $10 for members and $15 for non-members and can be booked by contacting Chris in Renmark on 8586 5282 or Gwen in Waikerie on 8541 2604.
HANGERS AND CLANGERS: Look-a-likes return
With Dillo and Co…
Riverland Look-a-likes is back. After an extended hiatus, H&C is eager to pick out some of the local celebrity look-a-likes again. This week we found the likeness between Brown's Well's A grade football captain Ash Smith and Kenny's Shane Jacobson hard to go past. Look out next week for a former Renmark footballer who looks like an AFL executive.
H&C was fortunate enough to watch the Riverland volleyball grand finals at Renmark on Monday night. H&C was impressed with the efforts of Derelicts' Simon Clark and Hamish Moore during their win over BOG in the A grade men's final. Moore's performance in particular was a highlight and it is easy to see why he is one of the state's best up and coming volleyballers. The A grade women's final kept the crowd on the edge of its seat and well done to Angels on their come from behind victory.
Moorook-Kingston's Nick 'Hot Dogs' White booted a career best six goals against Brown's Well recently. He was happy with his haul, despite the Warriors' unexpected loss to the Bombers. White could have easily finished with seven, but unfortunately he had an 'airy' right on the goal line in the final quarter. Rubbing salt into the wound, White's good mate Jarrod 'quiet during the day, but loud at night' Munn was there to pick up his scraps and boot the loose ball through for the easiest of goals. H&C feels certain 'Munny' would have let Hot Dogs know about it after the game, and later that evening. In the immortal words of Dionne Warwick, that's what friends are for.
Bowls and shooting seems like an unlikely pairing, but that's exactly what's happening in the Riverland this month. The Renmark-Berri Field and Game Association is holding its annual Fundraising Game Dinner at the Renmark RSL Bowling Club. The event will precede a 75 target shoot, to be held on the Sunday. “Why not come along for a great home-style cooked meal in a friendly atmosphere on Saturday night and stay around for the 75 target shoot?” said club spokesperson Paul Hansen. “And weather permitting, have some fun with a few ends of bowl.” Paul said we can expect some light entertainment during the evening. The local shooting fraternity are a good bunch, so it should be a good night. But numbers are limited to 120, so to book phone Paul (03 5027 8241) or Dave Austin (0429 878640).
Get on the Dockers this week. Fremantle is paying $3 to win by under 39.5 points this week and is up against a fickle and overrated Carlton side. The Blues were shown for what they are last Friday night against Essendon and the Dockers will be hard to beat at Subiaco. Our other money is on Lance Franklin for the Coleman Medal at $3.60. Franklin has had a sub-par season, yet only trails goal kicking leader Jonathon Brown by three goals. If the Hawks finally kick into gear, Franklin is bound to come home with a wet sail.
Loxton North Football Club was recently presented with 12 Sherrin footballs thanks to the NAB Cup 'super goal' kicked by former Panther junior and current Fremantle star Byron Schammer during the AFL's pre-season comp.

Derelicts, Angels claim volleyball titles
Derelicts and Angels took out the Riverland A grade volleyball grand finals on Monday night.
Derelicts' 3-1 victory over BOG reversed last year's grand final result and ended BOG's run of three premierships.
The game began at a frenetic pace as Derelicts got on top early through Simon Clark.
BOG had no answer for Clark's precise and powerful spikes as Derelicts took the first set 25-12, despite the best efforts of Alex Freeman.
BOG slowed things down in the second set, with Mat Haslett and Derek Martinson stepping up. BOG took the set 25-21.
Derelicts always had BOG at arm's length for the remainder of the match, with the high-flying Hamish Moore simply too good.
Clark was named A men's best and fairest on the night.
Angels recorded a remarkable comeback victory over Rovettes in the A grade women's final to win 3-2. Rovettes had all the momentum early, with Denika Gartery serving and spiking well.
The Rovettes took a tough first set before dominating the second. Rovettes looked en route to a straight sets victory, leading by three points late in the third.
However Angels, led by Tegan Schwartzkopff and Sally Nadebaum, rallied to take the third set by two.
Angels were down early in the fourth, but once again came from behind to level the match at two sets all, before taking the fifth with ease.
Kate Coden was named the A grade women's best and fairest.
Minor premiers Hot Shots took out the B men's premiership in straight sets against Hazara, while Spikers won back-to-back B grade women's premierships over Prue's Team.
Players are reminded that the second season will commence on Monday, August 3, and teams can nominate by contacting Marina Pater on 8595 1732 if they have not already done so.

Home, sweet home for Grant
Loxton expat Grant Schubert will enjoy a rare opportunity to play for the Kookaburras in his home state later this month.
The match will also be Schubert's 150th international game and the first time in seven years the Australian team has played in Adelaide.
Schubert, 28, won a gold medal playing with the team in the 2004 Athens Olympics, watched by his parents Bruce and Glenys, who still live in Loxton.
Australia will face off against Malaysia at the Distinctive Homes Hockey Arena in Gepps Cross, Adelaide, on July 25 and 26.
The game will kick off from 7pm.
Schubert has been a mainstay of the Kookaburras for a number of years.
Sunraysia teams lead the way
Sunraysia teams dominated the Loxton Netball Club's annual junior carnival on Sunday.
Sunraysia was victorious in each of the under 17, under 15 and under 13 grades.
Loxton North made the under 17 final.
The carnival has experienced a surge in recent years, receiving tremendous sponsorhip support.
Loxton B grade vice-captain Josh Nickolai (right) and Don Cregan will have their work cut out if the RFL decides to strip the team of six premiership points. The Tigers played an unregistered player in three of their four wins this season.
